The annual Munster Rugby Awards,
in association with the Irish Examiner,
took place in Thomond Park on Sunday night, May 9th with eleven awards presented
to worthy recipients involved in domestic and professional rugby in
Munster at which Tralee Rugby won the Junior club of the year. Tralee R.F.C. President Leslie Benner
accepted the
award at a packed function in Thomond Park. There are over 40 junior
clubs in
Munster and selection is based on a number of criteria.

The club has approx. 50 qualified coaches,
4 official Munster association referees( M.A.R ) and 50 associated referees. The
J1 side were runners up in the Munster Junior League DIV. 1 and the J2 team
reach the final stages of their league and cup. The women's side won the Munster
Division 2 league and the All Ireland bowl. There are also U15 and U17 girls
teams. The U17 boys won the West Munster league and cup. The U15 team won the
West Munster league and the Charlie St. George trophy in Limerick. The U13 team
won the West Munster league and cup.
The club also host the International
Festival which brought teams from Scotland, England and Northern Ireland as well
as the top clubs in Leinster and Munster. Some under age teams also undertook
tours to Wales, England and France.
There are also teams at U6 U7 U8 U9 U10
U11& U12 and these travelled all over Munster and Leinster for games this
season. The club is spending approx 200,000 euro on developing the third pitch
at present.
The club has two players in the Munster Academy Patrick O' Regan
from Ballyduff and Daniel Barnes from Ardfert. Both have played for Munster A
this season. Daniel Barnes has also played two games for Munster in the Magners
League and scored a try in the British and Irish cup final in Cornwall on Sunday
night.When all above is taken into consideration it is no wonder the award was
given to Tralee R.F.C.
This follows on from winning the Munster Youth section of
the year in 2007.
